School and old medina maintenance project

Partnership Agreement

This project is the fruit of a partnership between CSM, the local delegation of Ministry of Education and other non-profit organizations that work with disadvantaged children.

Relevance of the project

We decided to create this project because this school clearly needs to be refreshed. The facilities’ structure in itself is in a good state but from the outside it looks abandoned. This community-based school does not receive enough funding to invest in superficial renovations such as painting and building green spaces, even though it would radically changed the atmosphere for its residents. Our agreement is the following: with their subsidies they buy the materials and we provide the volunteers to spare them the cost of working labour.

We chose to also carry out activities in the old medina because we are aware of the demand of the population. The council keeps it clean but Essaouira is a very touristic place so we all think it is a great idea to bring volunteers to give it an original touch and brighten the atmosphere.

More info about the project

The aim of this project is to contribute to the improvement of the school. The place needs to be cleaned, painted, and green spaces need to be added, which will give it a much better appearance so that the residents can find it in a better state once they come back from holidays. The camp leader will organize various activities for the participants to make the work camp more fun: for example, the camp leaders will make a program to paint frescoes and of course the volunteers can also propose ideas.

Apart from renovating the place, we will do some artistic activities in the old medina, such as painting frescos on the walls or in the spaces allowed for that purpose.

The school and the old medina are a 10 minute walk from each other.

Main Context of the Activity

This work camp is designed to gather both national and international volunteers so that everyone will be able to appreciate the everyday life habits and culture of the each other through practical and social involvement and learn from the intercultural exchange. By getting in touch with national volunteers and social workers at work, the volunteers coming from abroad can actually get involved in the community, not only inside the center but also outside, when they finish work.

Essaouira is a tourist friendly town on the oceanfront of the region of “Marrakech-Safi”, the atmosphere is cool and multicultural and it is very easy to find your way around. The transportation network of the city and its surroundings is quite developed which makes it easy to visit all the places of interest of the area.

Its medina has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001 and the city is also well known for its fish and spices market. Of course, you will find plenty of options for accommodation, restaurants, refreshments, etc. Tourism also led to the development of beach sports such as windsurfing and kite surfing, or even horse and camel riding… Just walking along its nice coastline is already nice and relaxing.

Volunteers Requirements

• No previous working experience required although pedagogical skills would give extra quality to the project.

• Enthusiastic, positive and respectful people needed.

• Willingness to develop ties with other nationalities and learn new things; we encourage everyone to follow the pace they feel comfortable with.

Volunteers Duties

• Five days of work per week and two days off, not necessarily on weekends (depends on the work schedule.)

• 4 hours of work per day in the morning or in the afternoon.

• Paint the school for basic maintenance purposes and in a creative way  bring life into it.

• Clean the residence.

•“Green activities”: Help creating green spaces, planting trees or shrubbery for example.

• Cook in teams with other volunteers, both national and international.

Accommodation Details

The volunteers will live in the school. Our agreement with the Ministry of Youth and Sport allows us to use the rooms for the volunteers to stay there. The place will be set up with mats and blankets although we highly recommended volunteers to bring their sleeping bags just in case.

Important highlights:  Toilets in Morocco are usually Turkish bath style. We prefer to warn you because we learned from previous volunteer experiences.

There won’t be a normal shower in the youth center, only a hose they can use to clean themselves. Nevertheless, Marrakech can reach up to 45 degrees in summer so the water comes out warm anyway.

International volunteers can also ask the national ones to show them the Hammam (public baths). Actually, you should try it once at least; it is indeed a very relaxing and enjoyable experience and has many virtues for the skin.

Arrival possibilities and Meeting point

Essaouira Bus Station is the ideal meeting point.

Essaouira has its own airport, so the best option is to fly directly there. Otherwise, you can get a flight to any other city and then it will be very easy to arrive by train and/or bus. There are direct bus combinations but no direct trains.

Casablanca's airport is the first international airport of the country and the easiest to reach from most European, North American, and Asian main cities.

As for trains, you can check the ONCF website:

Most bus companies don't have a website, although if you go to the bus station you will find several connections to Essaouira. The most popular and efficient company is CTM

Our central office in Rabat can help you find the best combination for you once you know in which city you arrive.

If you fly into Marrakech airport, the connection to Essaouira is very easy. The bus ride takes about 2 hours and a half. We recommend CTM or Supratours - both have comfortable buses, and both have several terminals in Marrakech, easy to find.

Once you have your flights details please pass them by e-mail to your CSM interlocutor so we can arrange with someone of our section in Essaouira to pick you up at the meeting point.

The info sheet will be send to you by e-mail 3 weeks prior departure.
