DRASI is a modern Center for the Protection of Wild Birds in Balkans. It is located near Thessaloniki. We are a group of people dedicated to the care and treatment of wild animals. We take care of sick, exhausted, or injured wild animals found by our fellow citizens in Thessaloniki or elsewhere in Northern Greece. The animals receive first aid and, if it is necessary, they are sent to the Hellenic Wildlife Hospital (HWH) in Aegina. If and when they are fit for release, we release them in the wild.
We are all volunteers. We have been involved in the care and treatment of wild animals for approximately 20 years. Anyone willing to contribute to the Greek wildlife can participate in our group. Veterinary knowledge is not a prerequisite, however you should be enthusiastic, responsible, and respect animals.
Our work is daily and often arduous. However, our unity of purpose and our sense of togetherness help us remain active in the protection of wildlife:
-We rescue exhausted or trapped wild animals.
-We take care of exhausted, sick, injured, or very young wild animals.
-We rehabilitate animals that are fit for release in their natural habitat.
-We raise public awareness and educate our fellow citizens and their children through environmental games and presentations.
-We participate in events and festivals that aim to raise public awareness of environmental issues.
The volunteers have to be motivated to work. They will clean the nests and cages and they will feed the animals. Volunteers work 8 hours /day. (They have one day off per week).
The nutrition is basic (meat, fruits, vegetables, olive oil, cereals, beans, lentils etc).
They can visit the archeological sites of Thessaloniki.
The volunteers will stay in the guest rooms of the center. Showers and toilets provided.
190 euros (60 euros paid in advance after registration)
Volunteers who look for LOW COST holidays MORE than volunteering are REQUESTED NOT to apply for Wild Life projects. There is NO NEED for tourists but for VERY MOTIVATED volunteers.
